The race began in 1974. It used to be run in western Columbia in the Strawn Road/Rt. ZZ area, but since 2001 it has been run around the big burr oak tree in McBaine.

Amenities: there are two outhouses at the point which serves as start, halfway and finish.
There is a shelter house where food is usually served after the race. Food from previous years has included such delicacies as Reubens, Velveeta fudge, and sauerkraut brownies.
The prizes for this race are:
Cheese for the individual who most accurately predicts his/her finish time
Sauerkraut for the individual who least accurately predicts his/her finish time
it should probably go without saying, but no watches are allowed during the race
