February 2nd 2002 Nut Race 5k
Nine females and 26 males showed up at the MU Reactor Park to race on a nearly ideal weather day for racing. The temp. was around 25 F at the 9:00 A.M. start with no wind to speak of. Unfortunately, the timing device malfunctioned after recording the first 7 runners, so we do not have times on 8th place on. The big Chronomix is in the shop and it looks like the small Seiko backup timer needs to spend some quality repair time, too. The weather for this race has been brutal in years past, so bad in fact that the stop watch actually froze. But this time it wasn't the weather, so we'll have to figure out what went wrong. I know how important times are for most of us who run for the love of the sport rather than to win. I can only hope that folks got their own times on Sat. and that all will forgive me for this lapse.
Allison Hodgson was first female in 19 something. She was chased by Nancy Taube who was perhaps 8 seconds behind her at the finish. Allison got a terrific start and put maybe 20 seconds between her and Nancy by the first half mile mark, but then Nancy gained some back on the first downhill. So it went, with Allison holding her own on the uphill portion and Nancy gaining a bit on the downside of things. I know this because I was right behind Nancy until she dropped me on the last of the three loops. Nancy won her age group as did Amelia Klenke, Lisa Wells, and Andrea Allen. Other age-group 2nd & 3rd place finishers were:Kala Jennings, Amy Gundy, and Julie Bresniek.
Christian Reed won the male overall title in 16:28. It turned out to be a pretty close finish between Christian and Gerald Holtmeyer. Interestingly, both Holtmeyer and Taube are in their 40s. Quite impressive! Note the close races between Wilson, Bourgeois, and Weghorst. Other age-group male winners were: John Smeda/Brian Anderson (tie), Gerald Holtmeyer, Jim O'Dell, and Dick Hessler. Other nut winners were: Curtis Gardner, Andy Emerson, Stephen Bourgeois, Mark Wilson, John Weghorst, Kirk Anderson, and Joe Duncan.
I owe a very special thanks to Tom Allen, Anne Hessler, Dan Hooley, and Amy Gundy for their help with the race.
