23rd Annual Sedalia Half Marathon
– March 26, 2005
Lance Winders, a teacher on spring break from Mansfield,
TN, ran to victory in the 23rd
addition of the SHM. Lance had company
for only a short while and after a slow (for him) 5:43
opening mile, Lance threw down a series of sub 5:30
miles which put him ahead for good after the 3 mile mark. Second place finisher, Kent Lang,
Sedalia, lurked off the pace and was within striking distance with 4 miles to
go, but Lance was strong down the stretch and actually pulled away, winning
comfortably by 30 seconds in 1:13:44.
The women’s race was no contest at the front. Suzie Scheer, Leawood,
KS, led from start to finish and
placed a well-deserved 6th overall in 1:28:10. Second place was Heidi Bryant, Kansas
City, in 1:33:58.
In age group competition, 78 year-old, Bob Mahoney, Springfield,
ran a state record time of 1:57:26
breaking his own old 75-79 record by nearly 3 minutes.
Weather Conditions – 42 degrees, some drizzle, Winds NE 5 to
10mph.
