2007 Heart for Africa 5K
Overall Finish List
September 15, 2007
Long Run Lunatics / Columbia Track Club
I want to thank all of you who came out to participate in the first running of the Heart for Africa 5K. All proceeds from this event will be donated directly to orphanages in the destitute African nation of Burkina Faso. The weather was near-perfect as the temperature was in the low 50s at the start. I had hoped that the course would be fast, but the hilly second mile turned out to be challenging enough to slow everyone down.

Both the men’s race and the women’s race came down to the wire. Ryan O’Laughlin was able to hold off a hard-charging Christian Reed to take first place for the men. A mere four seconds separated them. The women’s race was even tighter as Anne Janku bested Kay Bruemmer by less than a second.

We hope to make this race an annual event, so any recommendations that you could make for us to improve the race would be greatly appreciated. We already have a few ideas, one of which is to put some sort of lighting in the tunnels to increase visibility if we keep the same route.

We want to thank our generous sponsors: Hy-Vee, MasterTech Plumbing, Kinko’s and Les Bourgeois Winery & Bistro. As always, Tom Allen deserves some praise as he was at the finish line making sure that your time was accurately recorded. Again, thank you for “showing your heart” and making this inaugural race a success.

--Brett Barton, race director
