First Night 5k 2012

2012 First Night 5k Overall Finish List December 31, 2012 Columbia Track Club
Despite wintery conditions, First Night 5K runners boasted some impressive times. Mike Lundgren, state record keeper (www.staterunningrecords.com and www.mararunning.org) informed us that Nicole Mello’s time of 18:20 was “a new state single age record for 5k”. Congrats to Nicole, age 17, whom we know and love as one of Columbia’s premiere female athletes of all ages. A course must be USATF certified for a finish time to be eligible for a state record, and First Night 5K is certified, thanks to Patrick Hanson. The top 2 male finishers broke 16 minutes. Executing his last duty, outgoing CTC President Bill Stolz helped me maneuver the lead vehicle. From my van we watched the battle for men’s first place between Caleb Wilfong the younger, and Tim Cornell as they exchanged the lead through the first mile and a half. Bill remarked it was more fun to watch the battle than be in it. Upcoming CTC President Matt Drier ‘ran’ the finish line as Caleb (15:40 and Tim (15:55) crossed. Tim saved enough reserve to help Matt at the finish line for the rest of the race. 4 of the top finishers were Masters: Tim Langen 3rd, (17:27), Marc Keys (18:05), Dan Edidin (18:13), and Scott Mantooth (19:22). 3 women were under 20:15 minutes, Nicole, Lauren Hillard (19:43), and our CTC Newsletter Editor extraordinaire Whitney Dreier (20:13). Of the 294 registered, only 205 finished the race. We assume the snowy forecast and chilly temperatures kept them away. Temperature at race time was 33 degrees and dropping.
