2010 Cheese & Sauerkraut 10M Overall Finish List December 11, 2010 Columbia Track Club | |||||||||

We were very lucky. The weather forecast told of Saturday, December 11, as the day that the warm fall would come to an abrupt end. The forecast was right. It would start with cold rain, high winds, rapidly falling temperatures, and end with 2" of snow, screeching wind, and 14 degrees. Fortunately, the weather event described above started minutes after the last award was presented and the parking lot at the McBaine MKT trailhead emptied of the last vehicle, my little red Toyota pickup. For the race itself, the runners enjoyed perfect, make that ultra-perfect, racing conditions- 42 degrees, no wind at all, misty drizzle until 30 minutes or so miles into the race, and even some lighter-looking skies at times.
Nancy Taube won the very nice basket of assorted imported cheeses, and Kevin Stone captured the incredible and probably inedible super-sized jar of genuine sauerkraut, also known as "Victory Cabbage" by the Yanks during WWII. Kevin was up with the leaders until he suffered a leg cramp and more or less had to walk in from a good ways out. Andy Emerson just edged out Andy Starostska in 1:03:50 for first male and Kyla Berendzen took the female title in 1:11:11, running almost barefoot in 10-toe snuggies, called "5 Fingers" for some reason known only to Phil Knight and the NIKE shoe mavens. Fifty people finished to a pan full of wonderful sauerkraut brownies by Nancy Rezabek. Consolation prizes included sandwich certificates from the Broadway Diner, Ritz Bits, packets of Cheddar Cheese slices, and assorted items left over from a previous race.
