Heart
of America Marathon
Labor Day
Columbia, Missouri
WESLEY PAUL first ran the Heart of America Marathon in 1976, at the age of 7, finishing in 4:04:08. He than ran the course in 3:02:19, at age 12, in 1981. We always worry about the conflict between cars and runners. The only car-runner mishap during a Heart of America occurred in 1977 when a car struck Wesley at the Old Plank Road turn-off shortly before 7 miles. Wesley had only superficial cuts, was taken to the University Hospital for examination, was released and was back in time for the awards ceremony.
